Welcome to the Department of Crop Science. This integral component of the Faculty of Agriculture pursues a clear vision and mission. The Department has an even spread of Academic staff that comprise four Professors; five Senior Lecturers; two Lecturer I; two Lecturer II and three Graduate Assistants. In addition, there are four administrative staff; five senior technical staff and two lower cadre staff. The dedicated academic staff conduct research and develop technologies for food and fibre crop production – the vision. They also train personnel to practice crop production and disseminate associated technologies – the mission. Collectively, the academic staff teach twenty-nine undergraduate and thirty postgraduate courses respectively. Crop Science students take cross Faculty courses in their 100 and 200 levels and thereafter up to 500 level, all courses taken are within the Faculty. The Department has a large expanse of land endowment for field research and also owns screen and glass houses for controlled condition studies.
Annual enrolments into the Crop Science programme has risen steadily and culminate with a Bachelor of Science degree in either the Crop production or Crop protection options. Generally, 85 % of our students graduate with a 2nd class degree spread equally between the upper and lower divisions. Majority of our graduates find suitable employment soon after graduation and most of them are readily admitted into postgraduate schools within and outside Nigeria. The Department also offers postgraduate diploma (PGD), M.Sc and Ph.D programmes in Physiology and Farming System, Horticulture and Landscape Design, Crop Breeding and Genetics, Crop Biotechnology and Crop Protection which has options in Entomology, Phytopathology and Weed Science. Undergraduate and postgraduate students of Crop Science are mentored to evolve into competent graduates and creative entrepreneurs.
